Cholesterol Drugs For Kids Debated.

Cholesterol Drugs For Kids.
This recommendation is from an influential doctors group, that children with family history of heart disease, as young as 8 be aggressively treated with [tag] cholesterol-lowering drugs.[/tag]

The guidelines advise [tag] cholesterol [/tag] testing for millions of children ages 2 to 10 who have a family history of early heart disease . Or other risk factors such as [tag] obesity [/tag] or high blood pressure. Under the guidelines, those 8 and older should be considered for medication if they have a concentration of LDL, the so-called bad cholesterol, greater than 190 milligrams per deciliter.

The use of [tag] statins [/tag] in children is now hotly debated and is creating controversy.
The reasons against the move are many.

We don't know the risks and the benefits.

We don't really know the impact of long-term use.

Statins has no comparable long-term studies for children.

Whether there is enough scientific evidence to justify such a move.

Some doctors predicted that the guidelines would lead to the use of drugs in children with only moderately high cholesterol levels.

Dr. Thomas B. Newman, an epidemiologist and [tag] pediatrician [/tag] at UC San Francisco, said, "There may be some pressure to start them on drugs to make these numbers better."

He also worries that the acceptance of drug use would shift the focus of treatment away from diet and exercise.

The guidelines, produced by a seven-member panel and published in the academy's journal, [tag] Pediatrics, [/tag] did not include any disclosures about the authors' ties to drug makers.

One of the authors, Dr. Stephen Daniels, a pediatrician at Cincinnati Children's Hospital, acknowledged working as a consultant for Merck & Co., which markets statins.

Dr. Jerold F. Lucey, editor of the journal, said that disclosures weren't required for academy-issued guidelines because the panels were already rigorously vetted.

Dr. Jerome P. Kassirer, a professor at Tufts University School of Medicine and a former editor of the New England Journal of Medicine said that the editors were "naive in expecting people would swallow those recommendations without letting us know if the participants had ties to the companies that make statin.

Truth About Drug Advertisements.

However, the studies, the longest which tracked children for four years, did not last long enough to show the long-term benefits of starting treatment earlier or the potential harms it may cause in the long term.

So parents be warned. Take responsibility of your own children. Be well informed and knowledgeable with the issue on hand and take charge. Don't allow the doctors to make decisions for you. Remember, they are not 'gods'. They don't have all the answers.

There might be some hidden agenda……the choice is yours!
