2/3 sudden cardiac deaths occur in over-60 age group
Recently, there have been reports of fit and healthy young men collapsing and dying while exercising. This do not mean sudden [tag] cardiac [/tag] deaths occur most in this age group.
The reality is less than 3 per cent of sudden cardiac death victims were below 35 years old. In fact, two-thirds of such cases were victims above 60 years old. Most of these incidents happened at home and very few cases happened when the victims were exercising.
However, there is a widespread perception that nothing much can be done to prevent sudden cardiac deaths. This perception is wrong because many studies show that more than 80 per cent of such cases were due to underlying blockage of the arteries that supply blood to the heart muscles. And there are many things you can do to reverse this blockage in the arteries.
This condition is called Coronary Artery Disease (CAD). And is the same problem that causes heart attacks.
What causes a heart attack?
There are many things you can do to prevent CAD.
There are:
Eat wisely
Stop smoking
Exercise regularly
Detect and control chronic diseases that are risk factors such as:
Diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.
