Is there a link between [tag] Hypertension [/tag] and [tag] Diabetes?[/tag]
Hypertension or [tag] High blood pressure [/tag] can lead to kidney disease and heart failure. People with high blood pressure also need to watch out for signs of diabetes because these two diseases often go hand in hand.
There are more patients with diabetes in the hypertensive population compared to people who have normal blood pressure. Similarly, diabetes patient have a tendency to get high blood pressure.
Another link between diabetes and high blood pressure is due to a resistance in the way the body reacts to [tag] insulin.[/tag]
The major issue with diabetes and high blood pressure together would be the fact that both of them are risks for the development of [tag] atherosclerosis.[/tag] (the lining of the arteries getting diseased) that increases the risk of [tag] heart attack,[/tag] [tag] stroke [/tag] and [tag] kidney disease.[/tag]
When an individual has both high blood pressure and diabetes versus either of those alone their conditions are dramatically accentuated.
The issues of age, inheritance and race patterns also affect these condition. Gaining weight is a very important risk factor. People whose weight gain tends to localize around the tummy have a much greater risk of developing diabetes.
The problem with this disorder is that unless you get your blood pressure checked. You will not know whether you have high blood pressure or not.
If you have high blood pressure with no other morbidities. Like diabetes, heart disease, no cholesterol problems or stroke and you don't smoke. It is better to opt for non-drug therapy. Like exercise, watching your salt intake, appropriate diets and increasing other nutrients that might be beneficial from the standpoint of blood pressure.
There are new guidelines based on both the epidemiology or population studies of diabetes and hypertension on the results of treatment effects.
The top number, the systolic blood pressure, is taken as 130. The diastolic blood pressure as about 80. These are much lower values than in the past.
Patients with a family history of diabetes or hypertension, the risk of developing these diseases is greater at an earlier age. Especially due to the obesity problem. Thus more individuals are developing elevated blood sugars and blood pressures much younger.
Because of this and poor dietary habits younger individuals need to be screened and checked regularly. The elderly tend to go to the doctor more and are diagnosed.
Early detection and treatment lead to improved outcome, with less morbidity as strokes, heart attacks, heart failure and kidney disease.
