Stroke Awareness

[tag]Stroke[/tag] is a brain attack. It occurs when an artery bringing blood to the brain either ruptures or becomes blocked. When this happens it deprives part of the brain from receiving the oxygen it needs.

Thus, the affected portion of the brain loses function and causes symptoms to appear. Once a stroke occurs, it is common to have additional strokes or [tag]transient ischemic[/tag] attacks.

Timing is very important when it comes to treating stroke. The majority of adults who suffer strokes have to be treated quickly. Because there is only a three-hour “Golden Window” of opportunity to avoid significant damage to the brain.

However, very often symptoms are not recognized fast enough and loss of blood flow to part of the brain causes permanent damage.

A “warning stroke” such as Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA) will cause a temporary loss of blood flow which in turn will cause a temporary loss of function. Like weakness or numbness of an arm and/or leg lasting a few minutes to several hours.

TIA is a serious warning sign of a potential more permanent stroke, even though function returns to normal. When this happens you should seek immediate medical attention.

Symptoms of a stroke include:

  • sudden dizziness
  • sudden confusion
  • trouble speaking or understanding
  • trouble walking
  • trouble seeing in one or both eyes
  • loss of balance or coordination
  • severe headache with no known cause
  • weakness or numbness of the face,
  • numbness of the arm and/or leg especially on one side of the body;
  • trouble seeing in one or both eyes

Risk factors for stroke are:

  • gender (men are at greater risk)
  • age (the older a person the greater the risk)
  • race (African-Americans have a higher risk).

Manageable risk factors are:

  • [tag]diabetes[/tag]
  • [tag]high blood pressure[/tag]
  • [tag]heart disease[/tag]

The best defense against stroke is prevention.
You can reduce your chances of getting stroke by:

  • Leading a healthy lifestyle
  • Stop smoking if you smoke
  • Lower cholesterol and lipid levels
  • Be more physically active - exercise regularly
  • Limit alcohol intake
  • Check for stroke risk factors
